High Tide Productions have successfully concluded their filming of Toni's War on Guernsey. After a trouble free shoot, helped by excellent weather, the crew met Film Commissioner, Tony Brassell to discuss the events of the last few weeks and also their plans for the future.
Their Occupation-themed, documentary, will now proceed to Post Production for editing and should be available for distribution by Xmas. They plan to have copies available for local sales as well as distributing the hour long programme through TV networks.
The film is set during the occupation of the island by German forces during the Second World War. It follows the experiences of a German Engineer with 319 Division who is stationed on the Island during that difficult period.
The film will look at the implications of the occupation in social terms. How did the Germans and British cope with living together while families and friends lived and died in other theatres of the war. How did the Germans react to hearing the guns in Normandy heralding the beginning of their isolation on the Islands? And how did they cope with the onset of starvation as the war entered its final phase.
In Toni's War, history will be used only as a framework, not as a subject in itself. The documentary will look deeper, into personal memories and diaries of both German forces and islanders, building an understanding of the people, not the events, of the Channel Islands' darkest days.
